When first trying to brainstorm ideas for my artefact, I created a mind map, many of my ideas stemmed from film or theatre, other ideas came from developing ideas I had originally started in skills workshops.

I decided to go with my My Fair Lady idea, creating a hat for the ascot scene. I created a moodboard looking at different adaptations of My Fair Lady including the film and stage production. I also pinpointed the colour palette of warm muted tones a different choice from the original. I also quickly looked at modern day versions of these race day hats.

I decided it would be a good idea to look for some historical inspiration. I looked specifically at images from Ascot in the 1910s as well as popular hat styles. Learning that a very wide brimmed hat was popular usually adorned with feathers.

I then began sketching some ideas. Originally my ideas felt to modern so I looked back to the historical research to try and ground the idea better in history while still having a slight modern twist. Also considering practicality as I want this hat to be suitable for stage, so considering wearability.

Before creating a final design I considered the techniques I would use to create the decoration on the hat. I want to use a technique I have used in the past for creating fabric flowers these would be dyed using natural dye to match my warm muted colour palette. I also plan on creating my own feathers using techniques learned during our Feathers and Fur project.

My final design uses a typical 1910s hat shape, I plan on adding pleats along the fabric on the central raised section of the hat. Fabric flowers will flow down one side of this centre piece. Two large fabric feather will sit along the other side. Around half of the underside of the brim will be filled with fabric flowers.
