Print & Dye

Updated: Apr 9, 2023

In these sessions we explored natural and synthetic dyes, shibori and dyeing with rust. As well as block, screen and monotype printing,

Week 1:

In the first week we looked at synthetic dye, using chemical dyes. We used large pans of water to dye the fabric. We also looked at block printing using Lino to create pattern which can be repeated across a surface. I tried two different ways of creating a pattern with my block.

Week 2:

The next week we looked at natural dyes, we used madder, turmeric and red cabbage to dye our fabric. I really loved the effect we got when adding either acid or alkaline solution to the dyed fabric which resulted in a colour change. As well as natural dyes we looked at Gel Plate Printing, to created layered textured prints that are perfect for use as backgrounds.

Week 3:

The next week we looked at rust dye, this was tricky to cover in the time slot as the rust needs time to be activated by the vinegar. We looked at different examples of rust dyes using different rusty objects. We also looked at mono-printing using acetate sheets to print designs onto paper. I was particularly happy with my fox print.
