This documentary film explores American cinema through the perspective of film director Martin Scorsese. Looking at the films that influenced his own career from the 1940s and 50s.

The documentary is very long covering a wide range of movies and directors who influenced Scorseses own filmmaking. He discusses the 'four types of director' who according to Scorsese fit into the categories of the director as storyteller, illusionist, smuggler and iconoclast. I particularly enjoyed the section about the director as storyteller when Scorsese went into detail on western, gangster and musical movies.
I recognised many of the films shown throughout the documentary, allowing me to connect to the words being spoken by Scorsese during the film. While the film was interesting it was very long to sit and watch and quite slow at times.
