This project was an industry project for Newstead Abbey, creating costume artefacts to be used as dressing up props for families. Inspired by the illustrations of Sir John Tenniel.
We began this project by looking at the original Alice in Wonderland illustrations, and identifying artefacts that could be created from these illustrations. I choose to construct an artefact based on the illustration of the White Rabbit in his court attire.

Initially I thought about doing a rabbit mask or creating his playing card placard. But quickly decided to construct the White Rabbit's ruff collar instead. I looked at images of original Elizabethan Ruffs exploring different depths and widths of ruff.

I then did some research into how to construct Ruff collars using Jean Hunnisett's book Period Costume for Stage and Screen (1500-1800). This led to me experimenting with paper forms to decide on which construction method worked best for me.

Once I had experimented in paper I moved onto fabric samples, I practiced creating the ruff collar shape, this allowed me to explore the weight of the collar, what length of fabric I would need to create a full collar and how to get the fabric stiff enough to hold its shape.

I then experimented with different decorative elements for the collar, including different machine embroidery samples and lace.
After I had made all my design decisions I drew my technical drawing and plan of action.

Once my plan of action was made I started constructing my collar
Overall I am happy with my final artefact outcome, I was worried that it might not be interesting enough for children and on reflection I wish I had dyed or printed onto the fabric to make I more interesting. I was most happy with the quality of the construction.
