In this we looked at constructing 1940s day dresses. We also explored the designer, maker, performer relationship and translating a design into a real-life garment.
Week 1:
In week one we measured our performers and constructed basic dress blocks. We had designer-maker meetings to discuss how the dresses would be constructed and what the designers vision for the garment would be. Once we has finished these meetings we drew up our technical drawings to gain a better understanding of the dress construction.
Once we had done this prep work we traced off our pattern blocks and altered the block to form our dress pattern. I also wrote up my plan of action.
Week 2:
In week two we constructed toiles and had our first fitting of our dresses. We used this fitting to alter our patterns. This week I also sourced fabric visiting multiple fabric shops to find fabric that matched the original design.
Week 3:
In week three I bought my fabric and created my pattern lay. Once this was done I cut out all my fabric to begin sewing.
Week 4:
During week four I constructed my dress, beginning with the skirt and then handling the top and collar.
Photoshoot:
Following the completion of the project we had a photoshoot in our dresses at a transport museum to get photos for our portfolio.
